SLSRC General Meeting, September 26, 2025 – Winlink Setup and Demonstration

George Siede – KDØPMW, will provide a live demonstrate of Winlink and how to use it.  He will cover downloading, installing, and setting up Winlink in trial mode and begin using it in trial mode via Telnet prior to connecting it to a radio.

Winlink is a global radio-based email system that allows users to send and receive email and data without relying on traditional internet connections. Originally developed in the 1980s to support amateur radio operators, especially long-distance sailors, it has evolved into a valuable tool for emergency and disaster communications, used by amateur radio operators, relief agencies, and government organizations when normal internet or phone infrastructure is unavailable.

George is the St Louis Metro ARES AEC for WinLink operations. He runs the weekly ARES Winlink Training & Practice Net. He is also one of the Net Control Operators for the Skywarn Net and Weekly ARES Voice Net.

Unlike a lot of my ham friends, George came to Ham radio later in life.  Growing up he had a great uncle who was a ham and his Dad gave George his original Zenith Trans Oceanic radio in the early 60’s when his dad upgraded to a newer version. George used that old radio a lot, sent off for some SWL cards, and even ran some wire antennas on his house when he was in college.

George got involved with using WinLink after seeing a presentation about 10 years ago.
