President's Notes, April 2017

by Bill Carroll, KC9CIK

WOW, what a weekend for St. Louis and Suburban Radio Club! The weekend of April 8th saw our club get together and participate in multiple activities:

  • We were in support of the Egyptian Radio Club and the Extra class training sessions.
  • Multiple members got together for breakfast at our monthly Ham Radio Breakfast at Denny’s.
  • We got together in our old stomping grounds at the James S. McDonnell Park to have a mini Field Day. This allowed us to celebrate seventy years as a radio club.
  • SLSRC took delivery of a brand new tower trailer.
  • Finally, we wrapped things up using the special event station of KØA.

I want to thank Cliff Rozar (KCØSDV) and Peter Brisbine (NØMTH) on their...

President's Notes, March 2017

By Bill Carroll, KC9CIK

There I was sitting down grabbing my Guns & Ammo magazine to read their take on my Beretta PX4, as a concealed carry firearm, when I was struck in the face on how diverse our hobby is.  I had the 2017 Guns & Ammo Annual and started flipping through it to find the write up on my favorite handgun.  Not even bothering to use the index (that would be too close to reading the directions), when I got slapped.  There was a picture of the great and powerful Hiram Percy Maxim on page 56!  By the way, the PX4 Storm is on page 28, if you are interested.

Back to Mr. Maxim, there were eight pages on the life and times of Hiram Percy Maxim, ...

President's Notes - December 2016

Another year for the St Louis and Suburban Radio Club is just about in the books. This has been the sixty-ninth year that this club has been around.  Many of us will be getting together this coming Friday, December 16th to celebrate the holiday season, and to enjoy each others company.  We will get to know each other just a little bit better on a personal level, and may even talk about amateur radio for a little while.

Presidents Notes / October 2016 - Elections

The definition of a club, according to Google is “an association or organization dedicated to a particular interest or activity.”  I believe that our club is so much more than that.  While we are dedicated to our hobby of amateur radio, we are also friends, advisors, and laborers for the hobby.  We gather ourselves on a regular basis to socialize, rag chew, mentor, query, and exchange ideas.

..-. .-. .. . -. -.. ...

By Bill Carroll (KC9CIK)

“You have a friend in me…” This should be one of our theme songs of amateur radio.  As I look at the membership for SLSRC, I can see we have members that are not within our own region. Most of these are former St. Louis area residents that no longer live here.  These are some of the friends we have met through the radio.

My Hobby, More Than Just A Rag Chew

by Bill Carroll, KC9CIK

Today I listened to some of the recorded radio transmissions from the Baton Rouge police shooting. While listening, I thought about how import radio communication is to the police, EMS, fire department, and a host of others on a daily basis. I realized that what I enjoy as a hobby is actually something that is a potential lifeline for others.

Show & Tell

According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of diversity is: “the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc.” The Show and Tell club meeting that we had on May 27th appeared to show the diverse interests of amateur radio operators. We had over 40 radio operators show up to attend this meeting. The range of ages went from early teens to over 90. Our varying interests included what food was going to be served at Field Day, to the purchase and assembly of the new tower-trailer for the club. It was exciting to see the majority of the group take part in the discussions that were going on. The meeting was based on the traditional “after Dayton picnic.” People who had gone to Dayton Hamvention would return to show off their purchases and treasures. This morphed into a "show and tell" from individuals in the club. We did have one presentation that was based solely on the Dayton Hamvention.
